Celebrating Identity and Kehillah-The Family Shield

In Ms. Levine’s 1st grade class, students have been exploring what makes each of them unique, both as individuals and as members of the Schechter community. As a part of this exploration, each student took part in the Family Shield Project, a meaningful activity that invites students to celebrate their identities in a creative and personal way through the creation of a shield that reflects both their heritage and their interests.
While our students share a proud Jewish foundation, every family brings their own traditions, values, and history to our community. By designing a shield that represents their family, students gain a deeper sense of pride in their identity and in all the factors that help to form it.
This project invited participation from both students and their families, making the experience even more special. Families shared stories, symbols, and heritage that helped students think more deeply about what identity means. This created a beautiful bridge, allowing children to bring their family culture into the classroom while learning from the diverse experiences of their peers.
Through this project, Ms. Levine’s students discovered that while we all come from a shared Jewish background, each family carries its own traditions, values, and history. The project made students recognize that our individuality strengthens our Schechter Kehillah. Together, they formed a vibrant tapestry of the values, traditions, and stories that make Schechter such a rich and welcoming community.
The Family Shield Project became more than a lesson; it was an expression of L’dor V’dor, the passing of traditions from one generation to the next. By celebrating their own stories while appreciating those of others, students practiced openness, curiosity, and kavod, showcasing the best values of a Schechter education.
